Kristen Garvey brings an eclectic mix of skills, education and life experience to her board position. Her love of community building began with her experience in the Americorps program City Year where she volunteered in an elementary school and ran an after school program in an underserved community in Boston for 10 months in 1998. While pursuing an English degree at Fitchburg State University, Kristen worked part-time as a community organizer at Twin Cities Community Development Corporation and was a grant writer for Legacy Consulting. After graduating with a B.A. in English/Professional Writing and a Minor in Art, she worked in the corporate setting in the Human Resources department of Bose Corporation. Her position in human resources led to an Office Manager position at a small landscaping company in Massachusetts. Having relocated to Vermont in 2014, she now uses her skills to support two family businesses: Garvey & Garvey Property Services and Inside Edge Rentals. She enjoys the active lifestyle and close-knit community offered in Ludlow as well as cross-country skiing, walking and watching her two sons play sports. In addition to BRISC, she is an active member of the Ludlow Elementary School Parent-Teacher Group and has helped run the ski program at Okemo for the last four years. She recently completed her certification as a Reiki Master. Kristen is excited about the future and believes that Black River Academy has a unique opportunity to reinvent local education in service to the greater community.
